The politics of the 1950s revolved around two primary leaders, one Republican and one Democratboth moderate, and both willing to compromise to move the nation forward. The Republican leader was President Dwight Eisenhower. His two administrations changed American politics. Ike’s desire to be president of all the people, to run his administration down the middle of the road, to be a "modern" Republican, set the stage for what the Republican Party would be for decades to come. His politics of moderation triggered a backlash from the party’s right wing that eventually grew into a conservative surge that reached fruition in the following decades. Standing astride the opposition was the Democratic leader in the Senate, Lyndon Johnson. At age 44, Johnson was the youngest leader in Senate history. His willingness to join forces with Eisenhower in the president’s battles against isolationism and reaction in his own party, along with the willingness of both men to compromise rather than engage in a politics of search and destroy, turned the 1950s into an era of political moderation. In The Secret Coalition, Gary A. Donaldson insightfully explores a period in U.S. history that many Americans regard as an "Era of Good Feeling" when the two parties got along, and the nation achieved some sort of equilibrium and cooperation. 1. Dwight D. Eisenhower earned public acclaim during World War II as supreme commander of Allied forces in Europe. The first Republican since Herbert Hoover to occupy the White House, “Ike” planned to hold the line against further expansion of federal powers. He worked assiduously to avoid being dragged into the school desegregation issue, believing in a “gradualist” approach to eliminating racial discrimination. Eisenhower helped steer the Supreme Court toward a middle-ground “with all deliberate speed” approach in Brown v. Board of Education II and hoped to allow states and local communities to work out the desegregation issue themselves. When the governor of Arkansas refused to allow black children to attend public school in Little Rock, however, Eisenhower was forced to send in National Guard troops to restore order. In the end, Eisenhower’s commitment to “gradualism,” albeit well-intentioned, allowed those dedicated to preserving segregation to advance their agenda, ushering in the period of violence and civil rights protests that would plague the nation in the 1960s. 1. American Legends: The Life of Dwight D. Eisenho...

A lot of time has been spent covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute. And they can do so while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. During the middle of the 20th century, the United States completed its transformation into one of the world's superpowers. Few were as instrumental in this development as Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), renowned for being the nation's principal commanding general during World War II and the president who served during the early, tumultuous Cold War years. A career military man, Ike was too young to serve in combat during World War I. But he began a long and productive career collaborating with future military legends George Patton and Douglas MacArthur while serving some of the nation's other famous generals, including George Marshall and John J. Pershing. Amazingly, he had never served in anything but administrative positions before World War II. Eisenhower remained mired in middle management positions until George Marshall, Chief of Staff of the Army, took notice of his skills and began promoting him. By 1942, Eisenhower was given the role of appointed supreme commander allied (expeditionary) force in North Africa. After his success there, Eisenhower oversaw the invasion of Sicily in 1943, which at the time had been the largest amphibious invasion in history. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Bloede. With those successes, President Roosevelt picked Eisenhower to be the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, leaving him in charge of Operation Overlord and the defining moment of his military career, D-Day. Like many before him, his successes in the war made him a natural candidate for president, and he was offered plum political spots by both parties before winning the presidency as a Republican in 1952. Despite being one of America’s oldest presidents, Eisenhower redefined the public relations nature of the office, in addition to positioning America during the Cold War standoff with the Soviet Union. But Eisenhower’s most lasting contribution as president was the construction of the interstate highway system, and it was in the final year of his 1. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. In this collection of linked stories, Michael Angrosino imaginatively re-creates the Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York where he grew up in the 1950s. This working-class ethnic enclave was in a state of flux; seemingly timeless verities were being challenged as a younger generation prepared for the great dispersion to the middle-class suburbs. Angrosino's stories are built around vivid neighborhood characters making their way through the joys, sorrows, and confusions of everyday life in a community that was soon to vanish. Meet: Ike, the embittered candystore owner who comes to grief when he tries to arrange a marriage for a long-lost relative; Sadie, the whimsical bag-lady who somewhat improbably pines to settle down; Pally, the tormented boxer who destroys his sister's happiness; Mattie, the optimistic good samaritan desperately trying to extricate himself from the coils of an ancient family vendetta; Sammy T., the undertaker with 'connections'; Old Man Conforti, the dying pigeon racer; the Del Lagos, the world's most hopeless streetcorner doo-wop group-and many more. In good Italian fashion, these stories deal with sin and redemption, but with plentiful helpings of good music and delicious food.

In this brilliant novel, Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling author Jane Smiley delves into the domestic drama of the Robison family. While seventy-seven-year-old Ike Robison is dying in his bedroom upstairs, his wife defends the citadel of their marriage against an ill-considered, albeit loving, invasion by their three middle-aged daughters and their twenty-three-year-old granddaughter. Amply fulfilling the expectations raised by Smiley's other celebrated works, 'At Paradise Gate' is a compelling, gracefully wrought portrait of intergenerational strife and family survival.
